How to Tell Time - Coffee Mug and Wine Glass Rack

This project came about by customer request. People will find something they like and ask me to replicate it.
How to Tell Time - Coffee Mug and Wine Glass Rack

Often I can figure out how to copy a project like the pallet wood prayer sign I made for a client, or the porch sign I recreated for my sister-in-law.

Today I'm filling a request for my niece.

I will always try to fill their requests, sometimes it's fun to challenge myself to see if I can.

This was the inspiration piece she sent me, I don't know where the original came from but I am going to attempt to make one similar.

The problem with making something like this  is that you don't know what size wine glasses and coffee mugs they have.

I'm going to use the ones I have at home to make this project and make it so the glasses and mugs will hang below the pallet so the size won't matter as much.

I started out by creating a pallet.

I used 3 boards the same size and attached them using 2 cross pieces on the back.

The next step was to make the shelf that holds the wine glasses.

I used a table jig saw to cut out 2 U-shaped grooves in the wood.

The cuts were a little rough then I sanded them smooth.

Believe me, they are not perfect but they work!

I attached the glass rack with wood glue and the nail gun.

I painted the pallet black to create a chalkboard look, I used DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint in Carbon, the color is more of a dark grey when dry but I am going to seal it later which will darken the color.

For the next step I used my Silhouette machine to create a stencil that says How to Tell Time... AM and PM.

I stenciled the letters with an off-white DecoArt Chalky Finish Paint in Lace to resemble chalk.

When the paint dried I sanded all the edges to give it a distressed look.

The pallet was sealed with Miss Mustard Seed's hemp oil to protect the wood and to darken the appearance of the chalky paint.

Before I added the hooks for the mugs, I tried out several sizes of wine glasses in the rack.

These outdoor glasses are super large and they fit perfectly.

I tested out the placement of the mugs using my largest sized mugs so I'd know smaller ones would also fit if that is what she had.

Using a smaller, wider pallet insured a perfect fit for most mugs and wine glasses.

Lastly, I added cup hooks to hang the mugs and then the final step was to add 2 D-Rings to the back of the pallet so it could be hung on the wall.

I hope this is what she was hoping for, I had fun figuring out how to copy the inspiration piece.
