How to Make an Easy Rustic Message Center
I made a very simple project today that can be customized in many ways. All you need to start is a large board.
The board I am using was the leftover end of this custom sign I made for my sister in law recently. It measures about 2' x 10".
The first thing I'm doing is staining the wood with Rustoleum decorative glaze. I use this stain for all my projects, just paint it on and rub it off. You can also choose to paint your board.
When the stain dried I chose a stencil for the top. I'm using this adorable bicycle stencil by Old Sign Stencils. The bicycle can be customized with many different adorable accessories like flowers, a dog, a cat, or even a crate. The stencil can also be purchased with words that will further customize your project. Old Sign Stencils has a whole collection of well made stencils that can be used over and over. They are a great investment for a sign maker, please note all prices on the Old Sign Stencil website are in Canadian so US prices are less.
I added this stencil with the flower basket to the top of my board. It is a challenging stencil for sure but if you visit Funky Junk Interiors, Donna will give you all kinds of hints and tricks to make it easy.
The next step is to wrap string around the board. I used cotton cording and stapled it as I went to the back of the board to hold the string in place. You can use jute, wire, or any kind of twine you may have at home.
I added clothespins that I antiqued with this process that makes them look old and rusty.
The last thing I added to my memo board was an old bicycle license plate I've been saving for over 50 years. It's funny what we save, I'm really not a saver but for some reason I still have 2 license plates from my very first bicycle.
And yes, I went by "Susie" back then, truth be told my parents still call me that.
That's all it took to complete this easy to make stenciled message center. Clip on a few photos and you're done!
It also works great to hold messages, lists, and notes in the kitchen or office.
Bicycles just remind me of spring, summer and my childhood. So does the scar on my knee that I still have to this day from falling off my very first 2 wheeler! 🤣
Thanks so much for visiting and I hope you'll check out Old Sign Stencils for this beautiful bicycle stencil. Give this easy project a try!
