Painting Stair Railings and Spindles

Are you always looking for the next update in your home? If you're like me I never stop thinking. I sit in the living room and look around and think about what I could change next. This project was one that took me 20 years to do and I do not know what took me so long! 

I've always wanted to paint the railings in my house. 

They are old, ugly, and outdated. 

All it really takes is about 1/4 of a jar of my favorite paint in a color I always have in my house but it took me 20 years! 

Today I changed that...

I have several home improvement projects on the back burner and today I'm starting the first one. 

We haven't worked on this hallway in a while now. 

Believe it or not, several years ago the stairs looked like this... sorry the photo is awful! 

But thankfully we added new lighting, refinished the floors and painted the walls a few years ago. 

Yikes when I think about where this hallway started!

But back to today, I'm using Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black.

I just love this paint!

Fusion goes on smoothly and it took barely 2 coats to completely cover the railings. 

I began by taping off the stairs at the bottom of the spindles. 

Honestly, I did this at the bottom of the stairs but by the time I got to the top railings I had thrown caution to the wind and painted the rest without tape. 

I used a flat artists brush to paint along the bottom of the spindles which helped me keep a straight line near the floor. 

The larger brush I used for this project is the Staalmeester Brush, it is a little more expensive than most but it works great and I use it all the time! 

I gave the top of the railings a quick once over with sand paper to remove any build up that may have been there. 

Then I began painting... 2 hours later I was finished! 

It took me 20 years to get around to it and 2 hours to completely transform those ugly railings! 

I have to say the hardest part of this whole project was getting my sixty plus year old butt off the floor.

The painting was easy, the getting up and down has gotten to be more difficult than it would have been 20 years ago that is for sure! 

I couldn't be happier with the results and now I'm super motivated to move onto my next project which will be an entryway board and batten treatment. 

The repurposed window on the wall was from my Grandmother's china cabinet.
