Advent Calendar Village
I found THE cutest advent calendar at Marshalls this week!
Now ya know I've made a ton of my own advent calendars and frankly, my youngest daughter is nearly 24 and doesn't do the advent thing.
But this was adorable and so one of a kind... I needed it! And I later saw a similar one at Target.
So home it went with me but it didn't end there, I ended up turning it into a project (of course)!
Take a look...
So first, the advent calendar was this long thin row of houses with numbers and a sparkly star you moved from house to house to count down for Christmas.
I couldn't find a link to this advent calendar but I did find one for another countdown calendar with adorable houses from TJMaxx.
I did however find a similar advent calendar at Target and you can see it HERE.

When I removed it from the box, the back of the box was a cute snow village scene and it was just as long as the row of houses.
So I'm creating a project out of the background piece! No surprise that I can't leave things alone without at least a little DIY thrown in!
I cut out the background piece then cut a piece of wood to the same size. I added a narrow shelf with a little wood glue and nails.
I painted the shelf white then decoupaged the background scene onto the back of the shelf with Mod Podge.
I have a great tutorial on how to decoupage the easy way with no bubbles!
When the decoupage was dry I sanded the edges to distress it slightly.
Next, I aged the background and the shelf with my favorite stain called Transitions Decorative Glaze. It stains the raw wood and antiques the background piece. Just paint it on and wipe it off! In this pic I didn't wipe it back entirely yet.
I added small houses from the Target dollar spot and bottle brush trees to make the scene larger.
When the countdown is over you can remove the row of numbered houses and sit the houses and trees on the shelf!
