Grungy Christmas Sign with a DIY Canvas
This fun Christmas sign is multi-dimensional.
I made a big mess doing it too! I saw the sign that inspired me on Vintage Farmhouse but I got carried away and ended up with a very different version.
If you like to create and love making Christmas signs and a mess while you're doing it then this one is for you!
Take a look!
First, I was in need of a canvas but I only had the frame from an old one so I made one.

Using drop cloth fabric, I made a canvas by stretching and stapling the fabric around an old wooden frame.
I painted the frame with several coats of Fusion Mineral Paint in Casement. I let it dry overnight, then started my mess... I mean sign.
I cut vinyl stencil letters with my Cricut Joy machine and placed them on the painted fabric. I needed a heck of a lot of painter's tape around the letters because the letters had thin edges.
I stenciled the letters then looked for a Christmas tree stencil in the box of little Christmas stencils I bought a while back at the craft store.
Once the lettering was dry I began my assault on the canvas. Using black and gold spray paint, drips and speckles of black, white and brown craft paint, and finally Transformations Decorative Glaze, I went to work!
I dabbed, sprayed, dripped, speckled and rubbed until the canvas looked grungy... just the look I was going for!
Sorry there aren't too many photos of the process... trust me it was messy! I even ruined my shirt!
When everything was splattered and dry I made a frame for my canvas using trim molding from Home Depot I stained with the Transformations Decorative Glaze.
And you should see what my workshop looks like now! It took me longer to clean up the workshop than it did to make the sign.
