My answer is that you repurpose it. That was the case with the large terra cotta pot I left out over the winter. 
It broke, in a bunch of fairly large pieces and I knew there must be something I could do with them.

The owls I saw were actually made from wood scraps and weren't painted at all.

For years now we have had very large and overgrown trees shading our backyard and deck. The trees were our neighbors trees and blocked all the sun from our yard.
