Stenciled Cross Placemats
I've wanted to make a project with the Swiss cross design for a long time now.
I love black and white and graphic designs so this covers all the bases for me.
I often see the simple cross on pillows but today I'm going to make placemats using an awesome and easy to use stencil with the perfect cross design.
Take a look ...
Like I said, I've loved the look of the cross design for a long time now so when Old Sign Stencils came out with the cross design in 3 different size stencils, I was all in!
Today I'm using the largest size stencil and a set of very inexpensive vinyl placemats I bought recently.
This project is seriously so simple there is almost no tutorial!
I'm using Fusion Mineral Paint in the color Coal Black. This is my "go to" black for everything! I love that this paint is so durable that it can be used on a vinyl placemat and washed when necessary.
The vinyl placemats I'm using have a weave in them so I used a just a little bit of paint on my stencil brush so I didn't get paint through the weave. I actually use an old textured tile to wipe some of the paint off my brush before I use it on the stencil. This gives me the perfect amount of paint on my stencil brush.
I just eyeballed the placement of the stencil which just happened to almost fit perfectly on the placemat.
I stenciled the 4 crosses on the stencil then moved it over to do 2 more crosses.
Because I didn't use too much paint, the placemats took only minutes to dry.
As you can see my placemats had a big fold in the center from shipping but all I had to do was to cover them with a cloth and steam them flat when I was finished. Ironing or steaming is always a good idea to set paint too!
That's it!
I did 6 placemats in no time and I just love the way they turned out!
They look great on my very long farmhouse table and they couldn't be easier to make!
I'm a big fan of black, white and grey as you can see so these placemats are perfect with my dishes.

These vinyl placemats with this simple design will be perfect for outdoors this summer too! They would make a great gift too!

I'm looking forward to using this stencil again in other sizes too! The best part of Old Sign Stencils by Funky Junk Interiors is that they are so durable. I have many of their stencils and not only are they made from quality materials, they last forever! You will find that you can use even just small parts of their stencils on projects too.
