Old Decorative Pumpkin Makeover

We all have them... those old heirloom pumpkins we bought years ago to decorate our homes for Fall.

Fast forward a few years, they've been stored in bins in the basement or garage and they now have bumps, bruises, and scuffs you didn't notice until it was time to take them out again.

I don't know about you but mine even get batted and bounced around by the grandchildren when they're on display during the season.

I've finally decided it was time for a mine to get a makeover!

Take a look...

Today I'm using Fusion Mineral Paint in two colors; Raw Silk, which is an off white with grey tones and Brook, a pretty light green color.

I'm giving these old bruised pumpkins a new look!

I began by mixing about 1/2 cup of Raw Silk with 1/2 cup of baking soda.

I mixed this until I got a thick pasty consistency.

I removed the stem from the pumpkins and began painting the larger one with the Raw Silk and baking soda.

dabbing on paint with brush

I used a dabbing motion with a large brush to cover the whole pumpkin and then let it dry. It will dry with this beautiful texture!

I did the same thing with the Brook colored pumpkin.

Once both pumpkins were dry I used a dark wax and a thin brush to brush the wax into the cracks around the pumpkins.

I concentrated more dark wax around the stem hole.

I immediately used a clear wax to blend the dark waxed cracks over the entire pumpkin.

Lastly, I painted the stems to get rid of the plastic look and re-attached them to the center of the pumpkins with hot glue.

I then used an old shoe brush to brush the pumpkins to give them a slight sheen.

That's it!

Can you believe how much better these pumpkins look?!!!  This should have been done a long time ago!
